History of Yoga
What is some of the
history of Yoga.
Yoga began in India abut 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. The word yoga
comes from the Sanskrit language. It means, to join, or simply
union. Yoga started as part of India's deep philosophical system,
but not everyone practiced yoga in India, and it has never been a
religion bit rather a spiritual path.
Surveys indicate about 5 to 6 million people in the United States
do some sort of yoga. Moat dance and all stretching exercise
classes usually have been inspired from yoga exercises from the
history of yoga. If you ever go to a physical therapist for your
body, he or she may give you home exercises that are based on yoga
postures.
There are several schools of yoga. The yoga you may have seen on
TV or taught at an adult education class is called hatha
yoga. Hatha yoga has many health benefits. You may also find
yoga being taught in a hospital or medical setting. Many doctors
today feel yoga can be part of a treatment plan.
Hatha yoga has three parts: a series of exercises or movements
called asana , breathing techniques of all kinds, and a meditation
based on relaxation.
There are many other types of
yoga and some are more physical than others. I hope you enjoyed
this short introduction to the history of yoga.
